Husbando of the year. All years. |
Having never had a decent father, it warms my heart (and wets my eyes) to play a video game featuring a father that is more than just some faceless memory in the mind of the protagonist or some secret villain who turned bad for some reason that barely makes any sense whatsoever.
Now, a quick rundown on Nier:
Without spoiling too much, Nier is basically about a man (or if you're playing Replicant, a young adult) who has a sick daughter (or sister, if you're playing Nier Replicant) and he works himself to the bone to make sure that her seemingly short life is full of happiness. He is also searching for a cure for her sickness, which leads to <REDACTED>
Ah spoilers. Everything is a spoiler with this game.
Anyway, the reason papa!Nier gets all my love is because he cares for his daughter, and not in the "I'm stoic dad" way. He expresses his love for his daughter without being cheesy about it. For example, in one scene he is asked by his daughter to gather these outrageous ingredients (deer meat and wheat). The reason why? She wants to make her papa a stew. Now, the stew is awful, but papa!Nier takes it like a champ and manages to eat it all with a smile.
I'm sure parents will appreciate the scene and can probably related to it as well.
There is also another scene when his daughter is apologizing after having a coughing fit and ask if he hates her, to which he replies, "A father could never hate his daughter!"
Not going to lie, I actually dropped my controller after hearing that line and had to go sit in the closet for a little while (can't let 'em see me crying!). I still get a little misty eyed when I hear it. The voice actor, Jamieson Price, did a wonderful job with that line.
Since we don't see much of the father/daughter dynamic in video games, it was refreshing to see a male video game character that truly loves his daughter. I'm sure he and Harry Mason would get along quite well.
Oh what I would give for a Silent Hill/Nier Crossover.
