Alright, so as we all know, there are some really cool games about to come out. F3AR 3 and Shadows of the Damned comes out next week. Catherine and El-Shaddai are also coming out soon. There are a ton of others, but these four are the ones I'm interested in.
Now, I've been in love with Shadows of the Damned since I saw the first trailer. First off, it's being created by the fucking dream team! Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame), Suda-51 (of Killer 7 and No More Heroes fame), and Akira Yamaoka (guy that does the awesome music for the Silent Hill games). Second, it's a take on Dante's Inferno (the novel, not that shitty game involving some guy stitching a huge cross in his man-chest) with a Mexican guy as the main lead. It also has that over-the-top zaniness that I have come to love. I'd love to see a crossover featuring him and Dante. The monster designs look pretty awesome, but there hasn't been much focus on the antagonist. I can't wait to find out who Garcia (the main dude's name) will be fighting against.
With F3AR 3, I am mostly interested in seeing how the whole "Alma is pregnant" thing resolves itself. I'm pretty over-joyed that there is going to be co-op gameplay. I gotta admit, I didn't play the second game (I played the demo), but I did play the first one (and from what I heard the 2nd game was kind of lackluster) and I liked the interaction between the Point Man and his brother. Plus I like Fenton's creepy voice. It's sexy. Anyway, from what I've seen and read, it seems like F3AR 3 is going to have multiple endings. I think I read somewhere that the player will have a choice between helping Alma or stopping her. I also noticed in the trailer that it seems that the game will reveal some insight into the two brothers (there is scenes of them together in a clinical looking bedroom, as well as a scene of young Alma interacting with one of the boys) and how their lives were while in the research facility. Which is something I've been interested in since playing the first game.
Catherine, if I'm not mistaken, comes out in July. It's made by Atlus, it's designed on the Gamebyro engine (which is what Fallout is designed on, yet it looks fucking amazing), and has some killer music. What more could I possibly ask for? From what I've seen, the puzzles are pretty hard, like, throw-yo-controller-in-da-air hard. Which is why I'll be playing on easy/normal (yeah, yeah, I'mma casual). I love that the characters are all adults with most of the cast being in their thirties. It also deals with some mature themes that you don't see much in video games, such as marriage and infidelity. This is definitely not a "kids saving the universe" or "bald space marines" type of game. I think adult gamers will be able to identify with these characters because they are going through issues that we all have faced. And, maybe it will serve as a bit of a warning for male gamers who decide to cheat. lol.
El-Shaddai also comes out in July (I think). I played the demo and it is freaking beautiful! It's artsy, but it works. It is basically a story about a man named Enoch who must find and defeat several angels that have fled the Heavens. It also features a cellphone using Lucifer (called Lucifel in the game) from an alternate dimension where he did not fall from grace, and a pair of stunning blue jeans. The fighting style is pretty cool. It requires pressing the square button, but depending on how the button is pressed, Enoch can perform a number of moves. It's kind of has a ballet-like feel to it. I also like the purification system, in which killing too many enemies will taint your weapon, forcing the player to purify it.
There is a fifth game that is coming out this year that I'm interested in, but it does not come out until later this year (which is why it wasn't included up there with the other four). That game is Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Yes, the only game in the Persona series to never be released out of Japan is finally coming here to the States. If I had confetti I would be throwing it up in the air. It's being released for the PSP and is featuring new graphics and a new soundtrack (there is an option to use the old soundtrack; yes, two whole soundtracks in one game). I also heard that the game will allow players to create and share their own self-made quest (kind of like the feature in Dissidia, but hopefully it doesn't get screwed over like Dissidia did). From what I've heard, there haven't been any major changes. The biggest change so far seems to be that the Hitler character is now called the Fuhrer and he is sporting a pair of shades, but it's not like you can't tell who he's supposed to be. I also think that the swastikas have been taken out of the game, but the localized version might include them. Also, I hate the social link feature that is in P3 and P4, but I would give all my money for social links in P2: Innocent Sin, especially a Jun social link that involves taking him out to a garden or buying new tarot cards with him. Now all they need to do is remake Eternal Punishment and I will be in Persona heaven.
