Kunihiko Ikuhara (you know, the cool cat that directed Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena), is back with a brand new anime, and boy is it fan-fucking-tastic! And fab-fucking-lous!
The episode starts off pretty deep, with a monologue from one of the characters about how cruel fate is while a young girl sleeps in her bed. The next scene starts with one of the siblings cooking food. So far, seems pretty slice of life. The three siblings are eating breakfast, the sister is being adorably cute, then we get a flashback. And you know it's a flashback because a sign saying "flashback" appears. Basically, the sister has some kind of disease that is going to kill her. The doctor is all nonchalant, one of the brother's flip out, the doctor tells him "Doctors aren't Gods". End flashback. Then the cuteness starts back up.
Seeing a pattern here? Good.
The siblings go to an aquarium, everything is happy-go-lucky (remember the pattern guys), then the sister passes out in the courtyard. Cue hospital scene. She dies. Then comes back with an extra passenger who starts spouting some stuff about survival strategy and how she will extend the girl's life.
So, with the drama over, the slice of life stuff begins again. The scene is the same as the first. The siblings are eating lunch. They receive a strange package with three frozen blue ball-looking things in it. One of the brother's, Shou, runs off to school.
Long story short, the blue balls are penguins (invisible penguins that only the siblings can see), Hibari's (the sister) extra passenger makes a return appearance, magical girl sequence is a go-go, crazy speech about penguin drums and survival strategy, the sister loses all her clothes, plunges her hand through her brother's chest, and then there's a close up of Shou having a nightmare.
And then it ends with Kanba kissing his sister on the mouth while she's asleep. (Personal theory: The whole thing was Shou's nightmare, and Kanba's whole "God is cruel" speech is because he wants to fuck his sister. To be honest, I'm getting a huge Setsuna from Angel Sanctuary vibe from him. The scene where he kisses her seems like a throwback to the scene where Setsuna kisses his little sister in Angel Sanctuary).
Incestuous feelings, penguins, and magical girls? For Ikuhara, that's just another Tuesday.
I'm getting the feeling that this is going to be one hell of a ride. I can't wait for the next episode.
